Elliott McKinnell

How did you get into working with young people and how long have you been doing it for?

My first role working with children was in 2006 for Vale Royal Borough Council. Amongst other things, I delivered football and basketball projects for children at weekends as diversionary activities to reduce anti-social behaviour.

In 2008 I started work at Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council, where my passion for working with disabled children was ignited. I have 19 years’ experience working with a range of young people in various community, education and specialist environments.

What qualifications do you have and what are your special achievements?

I graduated in 2006 with a BA Hons in Sports Studies. As far as I am aware I was the first person from my family tree to graduate. I am a UEFA B qualified football coach and a Level 1 qualified boxing coach.

In 2016 I was invited to Buckingham Palace after designing a volunteering programme that won the Queens Award for Voluntary Service. In 2018 I was honoured with the Melvin Jones Award, which recognises outstanding commitment to community and humanitarianism.
I have also supported organisations to win awards including the Youth Sport Trust Awards for Innovation and Inclusion.

Alongside a colleague at Oakwood Academy I wrote the syllabus that enabled a child with Duchene muscular dystrophy to become the first power wheelchair user in England to pass a GCSE in P.E.

Raising two lovely children is my proudest achievement.

What is your role at Roar Potential?

I am the hands on company director. I oversee all the legal and legislative requirements of the business alongside delivering activities. One day I might be organising staffing for a holiday project the next I could be in a spiderman costume delivering superhero workouts to kids!

What is your favourite thing about working at ROAR?

I love a good holiday project or birthday party. I believe there is a certain magic in the air at these projects and seeing the children smiling, laughing and having a great time makes them memorable.
